About this project

Rows of Three is a project dedicated to data analytics around the NTT INDYCAR Series. Through interactive visualizations and accompanying narrative, it will endeavor to use the data underlying the on-track spectacle to tell the stories of the 2022 INDYCAR season and beyond.

So much that happens in a race is unseen, or simply unnoticed due to action elsewhere on track. But that action is captured in the data, and we can generate for ourselves a more robust picture of what actually happened in a race–-who drove well, which strategies and car setups paid off, who was lucky or unlucky–-if only we know how to look at the data through the right lens.

Rows of Three is an attempt to create that lens, or perhaps more accurately, those lenses, through which these types of insights can be observed. We hope to translate data into a language that can be more readily presented and understood. Furthermore, we aim to create a platform which enables you to uncover those insights for yourself.

Dig around, and share what you find: with your friends and family, with your online community, or with us. INDYCAR is rife with fascinating stories. Help us uncover them.

FAQs

1.
Who operates Rows of Three?

Rows of Three is run by turn3.io, a boutique data consultancy which places a focus on data-backed narrative and storytelling through data visualization and interactivity.

2.
Is Rows of Three affiliated with INDYCAR?

Rows of Three is an independently run project which currently has no official affiliation with INDYCAR. With that said, the project would not be possible without the support of the series.

3.
Where does the data come from?

The data that Rows of Three currently uses comes from INDYCAR directly. This project began using the data that INDYCAR publishes on its website in PDF form on its results pages, which include lap charts, section results, and pit stops, among other things. If you are interested in pursuing a similar project (and we think you should), this would be an excellent place to start: these datasets are extensive and robust, if time-consuming to transcribe.

4.
What's next for this project?

The Rows of Three project is still in its nascence, and what you see on the site today is the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we believe is possible in this space. Over the coming months, we will be adding several new interactive visualizations to help tell the stories of the 2022 INDYCAR season, and blending them with written narrative in an attempt to bring the real stories and on-track drama of the series to light. The site will evolve with time and will respond to the stories that arise, and will work to tell those stories as effectively as possible with fit-to-purpose visualization and interactivity.

5.
Will Rows of Three get mobile support?

Currently, certain features of this site only work properly on desktop devices. Because of the interactive nature of the visualizations we produce, we will always recommend viewing the site on a computer rather than a mobile device. However, we do recognize the desire to be able to view the site's content on phones and tablets, and mobile optimization is on the roadmap for this project over the coming months.

6.
Will Rows of Three work with other racing series?

Our primary focus is on INDYCAR. With that said, we understand that there is interest in this work for other racing series, and remain open to such work in the future.
